Caring for Your Septic System During Heavy Rain

Why rain stresses a septic system

When the ground is saturated, treat your indoor water use as the one thing you can control:
- Spread out laundry. Run one load at a time, and skip a day if you can.
- Take shorter showers and avoid running several fixtures at once.
- Hold off on the dishwasher until the worst of the weather passes.
Every gallon you keep out of the system during a storm is a gallon the stressed drain field doesn’t have to absorb. This won’t fix a failing field, but it buys time.
After the storm: check and recover
Once the rain stops, give the ground time to drain before assuming everything is fine. Walk the drain field and look for soggy spots, standing water, or odors, which can point to a field that took on too much. Slow drains inside the house that clear up as the ground dries were probably just the storm; slow drains that persist may signal a real problem.
If your system backed up during the storm, resist the urge to pump the tank while the ground is still saturated. An empty tank in waterlogged soil can be pushed upward by groundwater pressure.
